Altaf Merchant competes on the PPA Tour and started playing pickleball in 2017. Before taking up the sport he played college tennis for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, having earlier been ranked as India's top junior tennis player and represented the country at the Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament. At the 2023 US Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida, he won gold in senior men's doubles and senior mixed doubles, his first US Open gold medal. In 2025 he partnered Steven Deakin to win the PPA Bristol Open in Bristol, Tennessee.
